PHEVs and Air Quality

Driving on electricity instead of gasoline reduces greenhouse gases, but what about smog, acid rain, mercury deposits, and lung-damaging particulate emissions? A landmark study by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in 2007 looked at both greenhouse gases and "air quality" emissions from plug-in hybrids ( http://www.epri-reports.org ) and found that plug-in hybrids will reduce both. EPRI'S Eladio Knipping gave this summary of the air quality emissions of plug-in hybrids in a presentation at EVS23, the international Electric Vehicle Symposium in Anaheim, Calif. in December 2007.
